City Initiatives
The City of Madison has set ambitious targets to combat climate change. A key goal is achieving 100% renewable energy and net-zero carbon emissions for city operations by 2030, and community-wide by 2050. The city’s Sustainability Plan outlines 24 goals to reach these targets, improve resilience, and grow the green economy.
Recognizing the increasing risks of extreme heat, the city is also focusing on heat resilience. Recent decades have been Wisconsin’s warmest and wettest on record, prompting efforts to mitigate heat-related health risks and infrastructure challenges.
University Efforts
The University of Wisconsin–Madison is contributing significantly to sustainability. The university aims to procure 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2048. Additionally, UW–Madison is working towards creating a zero waste campus by 2040 through sustainable materials management practices.
